62-year-old lecturer drowns stepdaughter for refusing to sleep with him

The 62-year-old retired lecturer, Dr Ayoola Oyesiji, who drowned his stepdaughter in a bucket of water on the evening of Friday, 16 November,  has been charged to court on a one-count charge of murder on Wednesday November 21.
A source gathered that the doctor’s case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, on Tuesday from Agugu Division where it was initially reported.
The case, which was heard by the Magistrate in Court 8, was adjourned to January 8, 2013 while she ordered that the accused be remanded in Agodi prison until further hearing.
Dr Oyesiji was arrested for killing his stepdaughter, Aishat Mohammed by dipping her head in a half-filled bucket of water.
The Source spoke with the suspect shortly after his arrest, and his wife. Below are the excerpts:

Doctor Oyesiji
What do you do for a living?
I used to be a medical practitioner. I retired on June 30, this year, as a lecturer from the University of Ilorin. I am not practising for now. I am just waiting to go into other things.
What is your area of specialisation?
General surgery.
Are you married?
Yes. My legal wife is outside of Nigeria while I have a younger wife taking care of me. My legal wife and I are divorced but we have four children. I married my younger wife last year December.
How did you meet her?
She lives close to my family house at Atipe area of Ibadan. I used to see her during my visits to the area.
What happened between you and the lady on Friday, November 16?
We had a row. She stays in my family house where I used to go and see her from my residence at Ogbere area of Ibadan. I went on Friday and she said she would not stay at home with me, that she was going to her friend’s room next door. I told her that I would not be able to take care of her two-year-old daughter and the baby she has for me alone.
The girl and my baby were sleeping.  To control the movement of the little girl, I put her in a bucket. I did not know there was water in the bucket. The mother was shouting  about the place. All of a sudden, a crowd of about eight people came and started beating me. My eyeglasses broke and I was later brought to the police station.
What were you accused you of?
They complained that both of us had been troublesome in that area. I tried to force them out by shutting the door but they pushed hard against it and wounded me on my toes.
Did you injure the little girl?
No, I did not. I am not the type that beats children.
I learnt that the girl was sleeping when you carried her.
That is correct. I did not want her to interfere in what was going by running around. There was so much noise around and I wanted to prevent what could cause a major damage.
Your young wife said that by the time you came to her yesterday (Friday November 16), you were drunk.
Yes.
What type of drink?
I took some table wine, Bacchus to be precise. I took just the small bottle.
Knowing that you were drunk, why did get to the level of injuring your stepdaughter?
It was alcohol-induced.
I learnt that the actual cause of your row was your sexual advance towards her which she rebuffed.
Yes, that is true. She even agreed but I decided not to go on because of the heat I was feeling. Actually, I started having sex with her about three weeks before this incident.
•••••••••••••••
His wife, Barakat Akeem
What circumstance led to the birth of the deceased child and how did you meet doctor?
I was impregnated by a teacher. At first, he stayed with me in a room he rented for me but one day, he packed his belongings and left, saying he was no longer interested in me. I moved back to my grandparents’ place where I delivered my baby in 2010.
I met Doctor when he used to come to his family house at Atipe, which was just across the road passing through my grandparents’ house. He used to crack jokes with my grandfather and he later told him  that he would take care of me, as he had heard of all I passed through. My grandfather pointed his attention to my baby but he promised to take care of me. He used to give me and my daughter N1,500 weekly for feeding. Then he used to come home from Ilorin. I was given a room in his family house, where I later got pregnant with his child.
How frequent were your quarrels with Doctor?
We did not use to quarrel except the times he was drunk. Anytime he was drunk, he would start quarrelling with everyone, threatening to burn the house and accusing everyone of hating him.
What led to the death of your daughter?
He was drunk as usual. He came around and later went out for a ceremony. He took N1,000 to Oje area, where he went to have a drink. He came back and asked me for money. I gave him N200. He left and came back again, asking for more money for transport, I gave him N100. He still came back and said he was no longer going back to his house, saying that he would sleep at Atipe that night.
I asked what he would like to eat and he told me to get him amala. I did. He came and said he wanted to sleep.
My first daughter was already asleep while the younger one was with my neighbour who used to carry her. He asked me to come in for sex and I refused, telling him my baby was still small. Though we had had sex about two times, he told me he wanted me to get pregnant. Also that day, I was about concluding my menses but I knew that if I told him, he would not listen because he was drunk.
He dragged me with force but I pushed him away and ran out. My wrapper got loose in the process but I did not wait. I went to take a wrapper from someone in our compound. I came back and people followed me. I begged them to help me bring my daughter out, unknown to me that Doctor had already drowned her in a bucket of water.
People rushed in and asked him of the whereabouts of my daughter but he kept replying them that she was inside the well. They went in search of the girl in the well but could not find her. Someone just beamed light towards the bucket. That was how we found my daughter  head down in the bucket of water, with her legs sticking out.
People screamed that the girl was dead. We rushed her to the hospital but she was confirmed dead.

SS2 student arrested for raping 4-year-old girl

A 17-year-old Senior Secondary School student of Ansar-u-Deen Secondary School, Saki, Oyo State, (names withheld), has been arrested by the police in connection with an alleged defilement of a four-year-old girl (names withheld).
The incident was reported to have occurred on Sunday, November 11 at Ile Mesiah, Modina area of Saki, when the little girl’s mother, Mrs Sherifat Ahmed, sent her on an errand to go and buy a razor from a neighbour’s shop within the compound they reside in.
The woman, in her report at Saki police station, claimed that after about 30 minutes, she stepped out of her room to check on her daughter but saw her coming out of the shop, which door was closed in contrast to how it was usually left open.
Mrs Ahmed told the police that she also noticed that the girl’s skirt had been removed while her pants were torn. This, she added, prompted her to check her daughter’s private, and to her bewilderment, she noticed a deposit of slimy substance like semen.
Based on the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Mr Mohammed Suleiman Baba, a Superintendent of Police, sent some detectives to the scene and the suspect was promptly arrested. After initial investigation, the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan, for further investigations.
However, during an interview with Crime Reports, the suspect denied having carnal knowledge of the little girl, saying that the woman lied against him because of the problem he had with her which made them not to be on speaking terms.
Sobbing as he was narrating how the incident happened, the teenager said: “The girl came to buy blade from my stepmother’s shop. She asked me to help her attend to the girl and I did, after which I went back upstairs where we live. About five minutes after, the girl’s mother came and wanted to break my head with a stick but I stopped her with my hand.
“My stepmum came out and appealed to her but she was shouting that I defiled her daughter. My stepmother begged her again and told her to await my father’s arrival. When my father returned to the house, he was angry with the woman’s report, saying that he had warned us not to mingle with small kids in our compound again.
“He took a cane and beat me, after which I went to wash my clothes. It was while I was doing this that police came to arrest me. I had a quarrel with the woman and I stopped greeting her. Maybe that was why she told a lie against me.”
Confirming the story during a press briefing recently, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr Clement Adoda, said the boy would soon be charged to court. Crime Reports gathered that the case was eventually charged to court on Friday, November 16. The magistrate adjourned the case to November 29 while she ordered that the suspect be kept in police custody till the date of adjournment.

Bill Gates and Aliko Dangote Team Up to Fight Polio

Bill Gates
Billionaires Bill Gates and Aliko Dangote have come together to fight against polio in Nigeria.
In a meeting in Kano, Nigeria on Monday, both Aliko Dangote and Bill Gates’ Foundation announced the alliance.
Nigeria is one of the three countries in the world [including Pakistan and Afghanistan] tagged as having endemic polio. It is a four-year alliance and both foundations would provide funding, equipments and technical support to strengthen its immunization.
Eradicating polio “will be Kano’s gift to Nigeria and Nigeria’s gift to the world,” Jeff Raikes, the head of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said at the ceremony.
In a brief statement Dangote reiterated the need to keep assisting the vulnerable in the society.
“There is no reason for any one of us not to assist in keeping our people healthy,” he said. Forbes has labeled Dangote Africa’s richest man and Gates the richest man from the United States — as well as “the planet’s most generous person.”

26-year-old plumber’s son emerges FUTA’s best student

The family of Mr. Nurudeen Adegoke, were highly elated on Saturday as their 26-year-old son of a plumber graduated with a first class degree in Mathematics and as the overall best graduating student at the 24th convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, on Saturday.
Adegoke said being a son of a plumber did not deter him from achieving success.
He emphasized that the road that leads to success is challenging but thanked God for seeing him through while assisting him to achieve his heart desires as he had to put in personal efforts to get himself through his degree programme.
He said, “I really worked very hard. No unserious student can survive the rigour at the Mathematical Science department from where I graduated. I was very prayerful too.
“Right from my first day in FUTA, I was determined, focused and diligent. I was humble too because humility is very essential in anything one is doing.
“I was at the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, for my Ordinary National Diploma in Statistics. I got direct admission to FUTA, doing everything on my own.
“My dad is a plumber while my mother is a petty trader. I am really from a humble background. Being the first child of my family, I made up my mind to be serious and hardworking so that I could help my
parents in taking care of the academic needs of my younger ones.
“I always had it at the back of my mind that I must pass very well if I really wanted my certificate to be useful to me and I was always prayerful and focused.
“I used to get involved in tutorials. I didn’t play with my academics. I am not sure I had any social life because I didn’t want any form of distraction,” Adegoke added.
He urged students not to play with their studies and always have it at the back of their minds that they have to pass very well.
DailyPost gathered that 15 out of the 1,960 students that graduated had a first class degree, 561 were in the second class upper division, 998 graduates were in the second class lower division; 331 in the third class; while 55 of them graduated with a pass.

Seriously Ill obese American woman dies in Hungary after airlines say she's too fat to fly to get medication

Predicament: Mrs Soltesz had gained weight due to her illness and the airline said it did not have a seat-belt extender for her according to her husband
A U.S woman died on holiday in Hungary after being refused a seat on three flights back to New York because she was too heavy to fly, according to her husband.

Vilma Soltesz, 56, from New York, had weighed about 425lbs, had only one leg and used a wheelchair

She died from health complications in Hungary nine days after she was kicked off the first of three flights and now her death could now be the cause of a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the airlines.

On September 17, she had travelled with her husband Janos to Hungary to stay in their holiday home, a trip they made every year, reported the New York Post.

Before the journey, their travel agent informed Delta of Mrs Soltesz's condition and they planned to return on October 15 so Mrs Soltesz could continue her medical treatment for her illness - a combination of kidney disease and diabetes.

Mr Soltesz said his wife was already seated on the plane when they were asked to leave by KLM.
Struggle: In Prague although a local fire department were brought into to help move Mr Soltesz into three seats assigned to her, they could not lift her out of the wheelchair

'They tried to fit her into the back of the plane, but they didn’t have an extension to secure her,' he said.
She had gained weight due to her illness and the airline said it did not have a seat-belt extender for her, Mr Soltesz said.
He was also told the seat back could not take his wife’s weight.

After leaving the airplane, the couple waited in the airport for several hours and then were told to drive five hours to Prague for a Delta plane that could accommodate her as a disabled person.
But in Prague, Delta staff told the couple the airline’s plastic wheelchair could not hold her weight and
the staff also couldn’t put her on the sky-lift elevator.

The couple, who were born in Hungary, were forced to return to their holiday home until their New York travel agent managed to get them on an October 22 Lufthansa flight to New York via Frankfurt, which would be able to accommodate her size.

Although a local fire department were brought in to help move Mrs Soltesz into three seats assigned to her, they could not lift her out of the wheelchair.
After half an hour of trying to move her, the captain asked them to leave the plane.
'We had 140 passengers on board, and they had connections and needed to travel,' said Lufthansa spokesman Nils Haupt.
'The question was never the seat belt. The question was the mobility of the passenger.'
But when they returned to their holiday home again to make alternative arrangement Mrs Soltesz became more poorly.

The couple did not opt to see a doctor in Hungary as they felt the staff would not be familiar with her medical needs, and two days later Mrs Soltesz died and she was buried in Hungary.

'It appeared on the passenger’s return that it was not physically possible for her to board the aircraft, despite every effort made by KLM to this end. A seat or belt extender did not offer a solution, either,' said KLM spokeswoman Ellen van Ginkel to the website.
'After the operating carrier in Budapest was physically unable to board Mrs. Soltesz on its flight, and despite a determined good-faith effort by Delta in Prague, we were also physically unable to board her on our aircraft,' said Delta spokesman Russel Cason to the New York Post

VIDEO: Mexican beauty queen killed in shootout

Mexico-gunmen BAR

A 20-year-old Mexican beauty queen has been killed during a running gun battle between soldiers and a gang of drug traffickers she was travelling with in northern Mexico.

In a scene reminiscent of the 2011 movie Miss Bala – or Miss Bullet – the body of Maria Susana Flores Gamez was found lying near an assault rifle on a rural road. It was unclear if she had used the weapon.
“She was with the gang of criminals, but we cannot say whether she participated in the shootout,” state prosecutor Marco Antonio Higuera said. That’s what we’re going to have to investigate.”
The doe-eyed, slender brunette was voted the 2012 Woman of Sinaloa in a beauty pageant in February. She had earlier competed for the other, more prestigious state beauty contest, Our Beauty Sinaloa, but did not win.
Higuera said Flores Gamez was travelling in one of the vehicles that engaged soldiers in an hours-long chase and running gun battle on Saturday. Higuera said two other members of the drug gang were killed and four were detained.
The shootout began when the gunmen opened fire on a Mexican army patrol. Soldiers gave chase and cornered the gang at a safe house near the town of Mocorito. They escaped, and the gunbattle continued along a nearby roadway, where the gang’s vehicles were eventually stopped. Six vehicles, drugs and weapons were seized following the confrontation. It was at least the third instance in which a beauty queen or pageant contestants have been linked to Mexico’s violent drug gangs were killed and four were detained.

"I never said I married my wife out of pity" - Joseph Benjamin

The actor said in an interview with Bella Naija a few days back that he married his wife after she got pregnant because he didn't want to have children out of wedlock...but people are interpreting that to to mean he married her out of pity. The actor is not happy about the latest insinuations. Read his tweetsfrom down up...

What Joseph Benjamin told BN
What really happened in his marriage? “I was married for 8 years. It was a rather odd situation at that time. She got pregnant and I didn’t want to have a child out of wedlock and so I married her so we could build a home together, even though we had given birth to the first child. Things weren’t rosy then, but I believed it was the right thing to do for the sake of the child. I overlooked my own personal desires, I just wanted to do right. Our second child came and I stood by my family like I always have; but no one is perfect, we had our issues – the crisis persisted but we stayed because of the kids. But you never make that kind of decision because if the parents are not happy together then the children suffer.

I’ll also like to correct a misconception – she is not older than me, and she wasn’t taking care of my financial needs as people have insinuated. We were both starting off in life on the same grounds – no one was exploited.”
